In Dialogue

Went to see my friend SAM aka Seattle Art Museum. Over the last year they’ve really stepped up their photography exhibits. I really miss quiet afternoons strolling the Smithsonian museums back in DC, I need to do that more here in the PNW.

The latest, Dawoud Bey and Carrie Mae Weems, In Dialogue did not disappoint. My words will do this exhibit no justice, go see for yourself if you’re in Seattle. Exhibit runs through January.

8:45 Ferry

The mist kisses my face as I board the 8:45 AM ferry, a sure sign that fall is knocking and summer doesn’t want to answer. Push off from the dock, the fog horn blows. Sailing into the gray the Seattle skyline emerges, my Americano almost gone now lukewarm. I lower the volume of my audiobook as the captain makes an announcement for drivers to “return to their cars.” I gather my things steel myself for a morning in the city. I look forward to the ferry ride back to the rock.

SEA - DCA - PHL

Headed back east last week for a family reunion and memorial for my Pops. DC and Philly to be exact. Spent two days in DC and hung with my brother and got to see a few friends. Saturday morning my brother and I took the Amtrak at zero dark hundred for Philly. In Philly, we walked and walked, and walked, and walked.

I don’t have much of an appetite for travel these days given the pandemic, especially now with the Delta variant running rampant. Decided to roll the dice. The Philly cheesesteak alone was worth it, plus I got to see family I haven’t seen in over 30 years or so.

A few snaps.

When They See Us

I try to keep it light here, but my heart is heavy. I took our son downtown yesterday because I wanted to see the destruction firsthand. As we sat at a light on 5th and Pine my son asked “why are all these people cleaning up, what happened, why are the windows broken daddy?” My eyes watering, I told him about Mr. George Floyd and that people wanted to be heard and sometimes things like this happen. He replied back, “Can I get out and help clean up?” Man, if only it were that simple.

5th & Pine. I can’t breathe.

5th & Pine. I can’t breathe.

5th and Pike. The community shows up to clean up downtown.

We then headed to our spot on the sound where he gleefully ran barefoot on the beach while it rained. Not a care in the world. I wish I could give him that joy, that peace, that protection for the rest of his life. I’m taking solace in our children, that’s all we got.

One love.
